Amelia Earhart’s Cousin Set to Land at Bullion Plaza
As the first woman to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart’s story includes daring flights, unconventional choices and her mysterious disappearance during a crossing of the Pacific — a life that continues to fascinate the world. This November, her cousin will bring that story to Miami.
Nancy Earhart Burt will present “Amelia Earhart & Her Cousin” at Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum on Friday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. The event is part of the museum’s free Second Friday series.
Burt is Earhart’s second cousin three times removed, and has presented about Amelia across the country. Her talk gives audiences a chance to encounter both the aviator and the woman behind the legend.
First, Burt appears in costume as “Amelia,” recounting her childhood in Atchison, Kansas, her discovery of flying and later achievements as an aviator, as well as her marriage to the public relations executive George Putnam and her views on women’s possibilities.
In the second part, Burt returns as herself to explore the rest of the story, including Earhart’s books, how she financed her adventures, and the theories surrounding her final flight. Audio and video clips accompany the presentation.
Bullion Plaza has been offering Second Friday programs for well over a decade. Subjects have ranged from local mining history to choosing shade trees for Globe-Miami’s climate, inviting residents and visitors to discover something new about the Cobre Valley and its rich history.
Second Friday programs are free and open to the public, with donations gratefully accepted to support the museum and cultural center. Doors generally open at 6 p.m., with refreshments following the presentation. The museum is at 150 N. Plaza Circle in Miami. For information, call 928-473-3700.
